Further Support for African Union Mission in Somalia Urged by Senior UN Envoy

By Mohammed Subhan Hussain

Earlier this month, a senior United Nations official encouraged increased support for the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), cautioning that insufficient funding could jeopardize the progress made to date.

Haile Menkerios, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General to the African Union (AU) stated that: “It would be tragic, not least for the long-suffering Somali people, if the gains and sacrifices of the last decade were reversed because the international community was unable to provide adequate and predictable funding for [the Mission].” He was speaking whilst briefing the Security Council on the cooperation between the Organization and regional bodies, including the AU.

Mr. Menkerios, who also heads the UN Office to the AU (UNAOU), emphasised the mutual commitment of the Security Council and the AU Peace and Security Council to share the expenditure for AU Peace Support Operations approved by the Security Council. He accentuated the depth of collaboration at different levels between the UN Secretariat and the AU Commission, and that UN delegates are and have already been providing assistance to AU Special Envoys in various situations across the continent.

Furthermore Mr. Menkerios spoke about the co-operative engagements between the UN and the AU, and the Security Council’s acknowledgment that its considerations and choices on peace and security issues in Africa could be improved by briefings from senior AU and UN representatives.
